Rebellion Part 2 - Providence in the Fall of a Sparrow

A quick reminder that Part 6 of Rebellion, "Lost and Found" written by Timm Keppler and drawn by Dennis Calero goes online next Tuesday 7/14.

Today, I'm going back to talk about part 2 of Rebellion "Providence in the Fall of a Sparrow" which was done by the same writer/artist team as part 1 -- Zach Craley and Dennis Calero. I really liked Zach's decision to break from Micah's POV at the start of this story and take the time to introduce Sparrow in a very cool way. It feels like you're in a different story until at the bottom of page 3 Micah arrives and you realize "of course, he was tracking the plane".

When creating a new character in the graphic novels it often helps to give the artist a real life reference to draw from. Some artists, like Jason Badower, even like to take photo reference themselves, to make sure they capture the angles and poses they like. In this case, Zach asked if Dennis wouldn't mind basing Sparrow on his girlfriend, actress Kat Purgal.

Kat's look worked perfectly for Sparrow, and I know that when it came time for parts 3 and 4, Jason was very happy to have a bonafide actress to work with.  

As she explains to Micah, Sparrow is of Native American descent but we made the conscious choice here to try and not make her a stereotypical Native American character. She's simply someone who is in touch with her own ancestry. You can catch a glimpse of the tattoo on her back which is of a Zuni sunface (in honor of her mother).

I was happy to finally see Sparrow in a GN and also I was interested to learn that she was the one who was sucked out of the plane of captured specials before it crashed. Thanks for sharing some of the character creation backstory.

Sorry if this is not the right place for comments of this sort, but there are so many rumours right now making the rounds about the fate of Mohinder on Heroes. That the character has been written off. Apparantly, there is no information about him and Sendhil Ramamurthy has not been mentioned to have filmed any scenes yet. And questions in this direction get ignored. Which is the part that worries me. If he was still on the show, wouldn't someone just address the matter qith a few words: "Of course he's still a cast member" or something?
I mean... with 1961 opening up new questions about the character, there is no way you could just write him off like that, so I don't want to believe that this is true. But the lack of mentioning anywhere and the silence are really starting to worry me.
It's pretty bad, in my opinion, that Heroes would write off one of their core characters, and their remaining character of colour (aside from the Japanese characters who are usually kept in their separate funny storyline...). This would be sending a really bad message, and goes against the very concept of Heroes, this "ordinary people across the globe", this "diverse cast" that made Heroes great in the first place...
But what's really scary is that the officials (who? NBC, the producers? the showrunner?) might believe that if they don't announce things like this, the fans and the public will not notice. I don't expect you to reply to this, you probably won't. Similar queries have been ignored before, not just by you... but it is probably also in the interest of everyone making Heroes, so could you please let them know that the current direction that Heroes appears to be taking in Season 4, the focus on the Petrellis and the blatant dismissal of the characters of colour, the retconning of their stories, everything in that direction, is really alienating the fans. We see what you are doing, and we do not approve. We are unwilling to forget that people like Mohinder, Molly, the unnamed plot-device Haitian, Simone, Isaac, Monica, DL, thaat all these people ever existed. We are unwilling to pretend the story of Heroes has always been all about the Petrellis and the Bennets. We're unwilling to go with the retcons, which largely serve to make everything even less about the characters of colour, and even more about the bunch of white upper class Americans.
In many ways, it feels like you have lured us in with a wonderful story about diversity and heroism, and then slapped us in the face and perverted it into a stupid soap about a self-absorbed, arrogant family who is the source of not only their own worries and doom, but who carelessly destroy the lives of everyone they come across - and you expect us to care for them.
"Heroes" has become synonymous with "inconsistent writing" and "how not to run a TV show". And one of the aspects people are becoming increasingly aware of is how the writers, you, are ready to abandon even reason and consistency in order to keep certain white characters on the show, or to make them, at any cost, more likeable (which never works), but how a character of colour can be written off or villified or both, on little more than a whim. It is sending a horrible message, and I beg you, think about it.
Because if you people are content with sending that message, it means you are people who I, as a viewer, no longer wish to support. Heroes has come to stand for something that I don't want to stand for. It stands for a world I don't want to live in, and please believe me when I say that at one point, before Season 3, I was vocal about defending Heroes, also against accusations of racism. Today, the trend has become too obvious to ignore. Most of the new characters are white. Of the series regulars, three characters of colour are left. Or only two. Like I said, the rumours about Sendhil having been fired look more and more realistic, and seem entirely like something Heroes would do. Completely in tune with the trends we notice about the show.
Please, know that the viewers care about this sort of thing, and Heroes, who once made big promises, and is now breaking them, can't exactly afford alienating their remaining fans. Unless you have already entirely given up on the show. In which case... let's hope it gets cancelled and we are all freed from this suffering.
