Rebellion Part 1 - Rebel Yell

Alas, no new comic this week, but hopefully you're all up-to-date and have read Part 5 "Wanted" written by Harrison Wilcox and drawn by Jason Badower. If you've lost track of what you've read you can find all of the graphic novels on NBC's website in the extremely useful novels library. If you're suffering from heroes withdrawl this summer I strongly recommend checking out the "animated adventure" links for the novels. They're extremely cool. I'm also happy to announce that Dennis Calero will be returning to the Rebellion arc to draw part 6 "Lost and Found" written by Timm Keppler. This 8 page graphic novel will go online 7/14.

So since there's no new comic to talk about, I figured I'd take the next few weeks to go back and talk about the first five parts of Rebellion, starting naturally with...

Part One: Rebel Yell

After we broke the basic story for the whole summer (see my last post) Zach Craley was given the unenviable task of launching the Rebellion arc. I say "unenviable" because there was a lot of story to setup and not a lot of space to do it -- We're back at the time of episode 314, government agents are hunting specials, Monica  & family are kidnapped, Micah evades capture, learns of the plane crash... you get the picture. I was initially nervous of spending valuable page time with Monica as "St. Joan" but Zach absolutely made the right call as it was a very exciting entry into the story and judging from the boards, fans definitely got a kick out of seeing Monica do her superhero thing.

Dennis Calero did the art and colors for this and part two. Dennis is quickly rising the ranks of Marvel and has been receiving a lot of praise for his latest work on X-Men Noir. As such, we're very lucky that he was able to squeeze in the time to do some absolutely stellar work for us at Heroes. I particularly love the last page with Micah's face reflected in the plane debris. It was written in the script by Zach and Dennis knocked it out of the park.

My hats off to both Zach and Dennis on this page for finding a visually compelling and dynamic way to show Micah's ability. It's not always easy, especially in the format of a graphic novel. By the time you reach the last panel of this novel, I think they've really sold you on the anguish of this kid and shown you exactly why he's about to go to incredible lengths to try and save his family.

Comments should be in full working order now, so please feel free to leave your thoughts. Next week I'll dive into part two and the creation of Sparrow.

COMMENTS

Wow, you were worried wasting page space on Monica? YES, the fans love her, good thing you finally noticed. o_O I wish you all would have realized that before writing her off the show and then using her as a damsel in distress in some online comic.
You know why Heroes is losing fans? Because you dedicate an entire season to the Petrelli clan and Claire and Sylar being whiny, and then worry that ONE SCENE in an online extra might be TOO MUCH Monica.

I agree with the person before me, although not quite as strongly. Monica was a character with so much potential that was utterly wasted in s2 then seemingly abandoned. And while it was nice to see a little of her here, it's not enough!I hope we see her properly demonstrating her full ability, not just getting kidnapped soon.

I just want to reinforce what's been said in regard to Monica. We want to see her.

I had always hoped that Monica would become the one COSTUMED Hero in the "Heroes" universe. She had all the reason and motivation to do that. And a city to protect who needs her.

;)

Sorry...I love heroes but I'm boycotting Season 4 unless Molly and Monica. ESPECIALLY Molly! I'm sorry but it just doesn't make sence that Matt and Mohinder would just forget about her. Are they EVER going to go get her back from India!?if Molly isn't at least talked about I S4 me, and a few of my friends are done.
BRING BACK MOLLY AND MONICA TO THE SHOW AND NOT JUST GNS!!!!!

Having Molly on the show would humanize Mohinder. The writers are obviously trying to avoid making Mohinder likeable. They've been trying hard to ruin the characters, I would be surprised if they gave him his little daughter back, or acknowledged any of the past relationships he has built in the first two seasons before the retcon.
Matt already has someone else to protect, so no "need" from a robotic storytelling perspective to bring Molly back for him, and Mohinder isn't allowed to have a storyline or family or a motivation. The writers hate him. And this means Molly is disposable.

Just fyi- For those who wanna see more of Monica in the show - there might be relevant info here:

Just sayin'...

This is why she cannot be back, but this isn't why they fired her back then.

I for one am really enjoying this story arc and am grateful to have Ollie and Jason on the Heroes team. I don't mind that characters we are missing onscreen are showing up in the Graphic Novels, as I rather like it. It shows us fans that these characters are not dead and lets us follow their adventures (particularly if for whatever reason the actors and actresses can't be on screen.) I don't know of any other series that would do that. Usually characters get killed when the actor/actress can't or won't return and I'm glad Heroes isn't doing that.

I dunno, Heroes is pretty trigger-happy when it comes to firing characters who aren't named Petrelli. They've fired series regulars, people they had under contract, that has nothing to do with the actors not being available, that's simply not giving a damn about these characters.
I'm not glad Heroes is doing that, because it means the TV show gets worse and worse and the only chance I get to see my favourite characters is some badly drawn online comics.

@ Anna:
To be honest I'm not sure what you are looking for or expecting. Would you rather characters be killed off if for some reason their actor/actress can't be on screen?

I also would like to state, that with very rare exceptions, I have found the art in the entire run of graphic novels to be very well and beautifully drawn especially the latest arc.

Also I would like to point out that my favorite character is not a Petrelli at all, he is the man known as Claude Rains.

I will also admit to commenting about it, on the one occasion when Claude was not drawn properly, back in 2007, as well as (also in 2007) commenting when the colorist did not color his eyes or hair correctly.

This past year's (2008-2009) GN's have been phenomenal not only art and colorwise but also story wise. I like the fact that with Heroes, if we can't see it on screen be it due to infeasibility of effects, cast availability, or the series being on hiatus, or whatever, we can always count on a good graphic novel.

Where did I say I want characters killed off when their actors are not available? I was referring to when actors were still under contract with Heroes, therefore available, yet were written out because for some reason, they were deemed unnecessary. Monica was a series regular. They let her out of that contract in the middle of her storyline and character development. Dana was available and happy to be on the show, but they fired her. Of course now she is unavailable, but that had nothing to do with the situation when she was still on Heroes as a series regular and they decided not to use her.

Took me period to read every one of the feedback, but We actually loved the content. It proved to be very necessary to me and Seen to each of the commenter following! It can be good after you can’t alone learn, but in addition engaged! I’m sure you’d pleasure writing this informative article. Anyway, with my language, there isn’t a great deal good source similar to this.

Jason was very happy to have a bonafide actress to work with.
